Top 12 Cyber Security Stats of 2021

As reported in the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) Annual Review 2021, cyber attacks are continuing to increase. There are several reports detailing both the good and the bad of cyber security over the last 12 months. We’ve collated some of the key stats from 2021 in this latest blog. How do you benchmark against some of these?

777

The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has recorded a record number of cyber incidents in 2021. There were 723 in 2019, showing the rise in attack frequency.

144%

A recent study has reported that Zero Trust Architecture is expected to increase cyber security efficacy by 144% with 53% of respondents citing high profile ransomware attacks as their primary driver for Zero Trust adoption.

14

Ransomware attacks are reported to happen every 14 seconds. An attack could happen to any business. Would you know how to manage and recover from a serious attack?

20%

While the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) reported an overall increase in cyber attacks, they also confirmed that 20% of those attacks were on the UK’s Healthcare sector, linked to those involved in measures against COVID-19.

95%

95% of all successful attacks start with a phishing email. The NCSC 2021 Annual Review reported more than 13,000 phishing campaigns disguised as coming from the UK Government and NHS alone during the last year. The best offence against phishing attacks is defence; make sure your business is protected and your staff are well-trained to spot phishing emails.

88%

Did you know that 88% of cyber breaches are due to human error? Are you doing everything you can to train and educate everyone within your business to combat this?

43%

43% of cyber attacks are targeted at small/medium sized (SME) businesses. For both SME and larger businesses, ransomware is often the biggest threat, causing more than 24 hours downtime. What would a 24 blackout mean for your business?

55%

More than half of large organizations are not effectively defending against cyber attacks, it’s been reported in a recent report from Accenture. Cyber security tends to become a second thought for organisations, even those with in-house resources. But can you afford to ignore cyber security and leave your business open to the financial and reputational penalties that an attack may bring?

5.4 million

The NCSC received 5.4m reports from the public that they had received malicious email communications – resulting in the removal of more than 50,500 scams and 90,100 malicious URLs.

56,000

There’s a serious cyber skills shortage in the UK which affects many organisations’ ability to effectively protect themselves from threats in-house.
